چکیده

Fracture apertures play a significant role in groundwater systems. For proper groundwater quantity and contamination management, fractures have to be properly characterised. However, due to their complexity, fracture characterisation is one of the main challenges for hydrogeologists all over the world. This is particularly important in South Africa, where aquifers are predominantly fractured. Two new methods have been developed to determine inclined and horizontal fracture apertures in fractured-rock aquifers. The first is a water-balance method, the slug-tracer (ST) test: • The slug-tracer (ST) test [b = (r2 / R2) Δ h] and the second is a tracer-detection method, comprising the NAPL entry pressure (NEP) test and the NAPL injection pressure (NIP) test: • The NAPL entry pressure (NEP) test

Investigating the role of hydromechanical coupling on flow and transport in shallow fractured-rock aquifers

Fractured-rock aquifers display spatially and temporally variable hydraulic conductivity generally attributed to variable fracture intensity and connectivity. Empirical evidence suggests fracture aperture and hydraulic conductivity are sensitive to in situ stress. This study investigates the sensitivity of fractured-rock hydraulic conductivity, groundwater flow paths, and advectiondominated tra...

A tensor approach to the estimation of hydraulic conductivities in Table Mountain Group aquifers of South Africa

Based on the field measurements of the physical properties of fractured rocks, the anisotropic properties of hydraulic conductivity (HC) of the fractured rock aquifer can be assessed and presented using a tensor approach called hydraulic conductivity tensor. Three types of HC values, namely point value, axial value and flow direction one, are derived for their possible applications. The HC valu...

Fractal Analysis of Permeability of Unsaturated Fractured Rocks

A physical conceptual model for water retention in fractured rocks is derived while taking into account the effect of pore size distribution and tortuosity of capillaries. The formula of calculating relative hydraulic conductivity of fractured rock is given based on fractal theory. It is an issue to choose an appropriate capillary pressure-saturation curve in the research of unsaturated fractur...

Geophysical characterization of fractured rock aquifers: Accounting for scale effects and putting hydrology in the geophysics

Characterization of fractured-bedrock aquifers is one of the most difficult problems in hydrogeology. Successful characterization of aquifers at the site scale requires the effective integration of the three basic tools at our disposal: 1) surface geophysical soundings provide full non-destructive coverage of the aquifer volume but are generally ambiguous in interpretation and fail to identify ...

A method of estimating bulk potential permeability in fractured-rock aquifers using field-derived fracture data and type curves

A method is devised for estimating the potential permeability of fracture networks from attributes of fractures observed in outcrop. The technique, which is intended as a complement to traditional approaches, is based on type curves that represent various combinations of fracture lengths, fracture orientations and proportions (i.e., intensities) of fractures that participate in flow. Numerical ...
